From fifteen children carried on their mothers' backs — to a centre of hope.
Don Orione Centre Kaburugi was founded by the Sons of Divine Providence, the religious congregation of Saint Luigi Orione, whose calling was always to serve the most forgotten. We grew up around one belief: a disability is never a curse, and no child should be hidden away.
The beginning
More than 40 families had children with intellectual disabilities, often kept at home. We opened with 15 children — many of whom could only reach us on foot or carried on their mothers' backs.
Recognised for our work
The Centre received a Certificate of Best Practices from the Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped, and registration as a basic education institution under the Ministry of Education.
A national spotlight
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta visited the Centre, bringing rare national attention to children with disabilities in our community.
A daily journey of care
Our buses travel around 120 km every day to gather children from villages far and near. We provide education, therapy, daily meals, and the skills to live with dignity — and we are still growing.
